She deserves a lot of credit and respect for what she's doing. I understand there are lots of people who object to her image, but I don't have a problem with that at all. My issue is more of her hypocritical manner when talking about "ahimsa" or the principle of "not harming." She talks about this at length in her book and in interviews. But check out this Youtube video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F80lyRHxNDg) where she totally contradicts herself. HelloYoga in Japan did an interview with Kino on September 29, 2011. Around the video's 13:00 to 14:00 minute mark, she says she doesn't consume meat bc she loves animals and abides by ahimsa, therefore she's vegetarian. Then around the 16:42 mark, she talks about how she loves shopping and how many beautiful shoes she's bought on her trip to Japan. I guess she has no problem with how the leftover skin of animals killed for food is used to make beautiful shoes...as long as she doesn't actually consume the meat herself. Rather hypocritical, if you ask me. Or maybe all those shoes she bought are made of pleather. Somehow I doubt it. I read long ago that there is a risk to the physical practice: that yoga will turn into hamstring stretches. It must be practiced for its own sake, not to accomplish a personal goal; that is selflessness.

Remember also that this was published long before YJ took on its present incarnation as a commercial vehicle. I doubt it would make it in now. Jois' guru) writes in his book Emergence du Yoga:

The teachings of Yâjnyavalkya are always in the form of dialogues. [...] It is in discussion with the king Janka where Yâjnyavalkya emphasizes the importance of certain rites called Darshapurna. These rites must be held twice a month and follow the cycle of the moon. They are part of our sixteen Karma's, sixteen rituals that every being should do in his life.

Darshapurna decomposes into Amâvâsya and Parunima: the rites to be performed on the day of the full moon and on the day of the new moon. Yâjnyavalkya is the only teacher who explains why these rites should be made and what are the consequences of errors committed during the execution of a rite. [...]

To replace these rites that not everyone can perform, my father introduced the practice of Prânâyâma the day of the new moon and the day of the full moon with specific directions.Pensamientos dispersoshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12508168198669700605noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4964542208202120694.post-58147236390436745662013-06-09T06:37:03.217-07:002013-06-09T06:37:03.217-07:00Was checking about if Ashtanga was suitable for me...Was checking about if Ashtanga was suitable for me or not. Conversely, some of the sweetest persons I have met still cannot do Marichyasana C & D + Supta Kurmasana but are also working on some intermediate postures. So ego checking is to me not a good argument for not giving a student intermediate postures to work on.
The development of the virtues of patience, humility, non-attachment and faith can certainly also happen without being a yoga practitioner at all. I have seen it happen. The development of these virtues are not under the exclusive domain of ashtanga yoga. And dropping back is a nice gymnastic exercise, but I fail to be convinced that one cannot benefit from the intermediate and advanced postures without being a great gymnast.
Meanwhile, I will continue to work on the primary series, trying to lessen my ego and developing virtues. Or, I will drop the acrobatic exercises alltogether and just work on those core aspects of yoga ;-) peace, torgeirAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4964542208202120694.post-49276812006009995732013-01-08T05:53:36.716-08:002013-01-08T05:53:36.716-08:00Rashinkar Textiles in Mysore is where the best cot...Rashinkar Textiles in Mysore is where the best cotton yoga mats are found in Mysore, the original and best, the ultimate source:
http://rashinkar.com/index.html
they ship internationally.
